Ashwell Village
Ownership:

1066 Edward the Confessor gifted the new manor of Ashwell to the Abbey of St. Peter, Westminster who retained the village for the next 500 years
1540 Abbot Boston surrendered Westminster Abbey to Henry 8th
1541 King Henry 8th gifted Ashwell to Bishop Thomas Thirlby
1550 Bishop Thirlby surrendered the village to King Edward 7th
1551 Edward 7th gave Ashwell to Nicholas Ridley, Bishop of London
1554 Queen Mary gave Ashwell to Bishop Bonner of London & his successors
1647 Cromwell appropiated all Bishops lands & leased the village for £30 a year to a landowner called, Jeremiah Whitacre
1649 The village was sold to Thomas Challoner for £416
1650 The Restoration. Crown gave the village back to the Bishops of London
1868 In accordance with the Ecclesiastical Commissoners Act 1860, the village transferred ownership to Bishop’s of Canterbury
1889 Ownership rights of the manor lapsed
